■課題（As-Is）
院内で多用されるモノクロレーザー「RICOH SP 4500（販売終了）」にて、他社リサイクルトナー運用中にカブリ・濃度ムラ・スジ等の印字不良が頻発し、診療関連書類の出力が止まる状況が発生。特に外来・病棟・検査部門の業務ピークで停止が顕在化し、代替機も不足。プリンターは部署ごとにメーカー混在（マルチベンダー）で台数も多く、障害時に「どこへ何を連絡するか」が整理されておらず、一次切り分け（L1）不在が混乱を増幅。復旧時間（MTTR）が伸びることが運用リスクでした。
■原因（Why）
本機は「トナー／感光体ドラム分離型」。本来は症状によりドラムユニット交換が必要なのに、取引業者はトナー交換のみを手配し、根本原因が残存。さらに純正は重合法（ケミカルトナー）粒子設計である一方、当時品は粉砕法トナーで粒度分布・形状・帯電安定性が異なり、現像・クリーニング適性のミスマッチ（トナー飛散、転写不良の誘発）が疑われました。

Customer Challenge (As-Is)
The hospital relied heavily on the mono laser printer “RICOH SP 4500” for clinical documents. While using third-party remanufactured (recycled) toner, recurring print defects—backgrounding (gray haze), density fluctuation, streaking/banding—caused frequent output stoppages, especially during peak workloads in outpatient, ward, and laboratory areas.
Additionally, the site operated a multi-vendor printer fleet across many departments. When incidents occurred, staff were unsure who to contact and how to report symptoms, because there was no L1 triage function. As a result, MTTR (Mean Time To Repair) increased and operational disruption became a critical risk.
Root Cause (Why)

The SP 4500 uses a separate toner + photoconductor drum (drum unit) architecture. In multiple cases, the true corrective action should have been drum unit replacement, but the previous supplier repeatedly arranged toner replacement only, leaving the root cause unresolved.

The OEM design is aligned with polymerized toner (chemical toner / emulsion aggregation type) characteristics, while the previously used recycled product was based on pulverized toner. Differences in particle size distribution, particle morphology, and triboelectric (charge) stability suggested a mismatch in development/cleaning compatibility, increasing the likelihood of toner scatter and transfer instability.

Switched to SP Toner 4500H type filled with OEM-equivalent polymerized toner powder, operating with yield targets referencing ISO/IEC 19752.

Explained decision-making using TCO (Total Cost of Ownership) rather than unit price: polymerized toner is higher cost, but it reduces downtime loss, supporting BCP (Business Continuity Planning).

Single point of contact / centralized helpdesk: SIS Partners performed L1 triage to isolate toner vs. device causes (fuser, paper path/feeding, driver/network). We standardized an SOP (Standard Operating Procedure): symptom intake → test print → remaining level check → drum replacement decision → escalate to maintenance only when necessary.
